AJS Board Statement Concerning Proposed Federal Budget Cuts

Jun 26, 2017

The officers and Board of the Association for Jewish Studies express concern that the president’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2018, “A New Foundation for American Greatness” calls for the elimination or significant defunding of federal support for the National Endowment for the Humanities, National Endowment for the Arts, Title VI International and Foreign Language Education, Institute of Museum and Library Services, Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. These programs and institutions have sustained the mission of the Association for Jewish Studies, supporting our members’ research and teaching and fostering greater understanding of our scholarship among the wider public.

The officers and Board of the Association for Jewish Studies call upon Congress to continue government funding of these institutions and programs and others beyond our humanities focus, like the National Institutes for Health, which are essential to the civil society of our nation.
